Purpose:
✔ The job holder will be responsible for working with both undergraduate and postgraduate students on improving verbal and written English, study and transferrable skills. WIUT Student Support Services offers academic support, personal and professional development, health and welfare, and information and administrative support to students. Academic support services include academic counselling and advice, academic learning development, international student support, and study abroad. Other sections of the Student Support Services include the Career Development Centre, Social Engagement Centre, Counselling and Disability Support, Housing and Residential Support, Health and Sports Centres and Ask.WIUT information service. Student Support Services is currently seeking an Academic Learning Development Support Officer who will provide learning support to the WIUT student population in the areas of verbal and written communication in an academic context, study and transferrable skills. S/he will report to the Head of Academic Support Services.
Responsibilities
• To design, deliver and coordinate group workshop programmes on academic writing, study and transferrable skills;
• To deliver specialised one-to-one support for students who demonstrate the need for development of their academic English, written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking. This may include the use of diagnostic assessments to formulate individual needs and support plans, and one-to-one skills development sessions to students experiencing difficulties managing their studies;
• To provide advice and guidance to students on the strategies and techniques to improve study and transferrable skills, organize skills development sessions and workshop programmes;
• To support retention of students at risk through corrective intervention. To collaborate with the Academic Counselling section to reveal those students who may lack the belief in their capacity or study and/or transferrable skills to succeed in studies;
• To manage and develop a range of online study skill resources;
• To assist in the preparation of awareness and publicity material relating to academic supports (including posters, flyers, email communications and social media);
• To contribute as appropriate to cross-service collaboration on various student support and university-wide initiatives.
Requirements
PERSON SPECIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidates are expected to hold a Bachelor’s degree; a Master’s degree is preferable
- Candidates should have a high level of English proficiency to be able to teach English as a foreign language (IELTS 7.5 or higher)
EXPERIENCE
- Evidence of work experience in English language teaching and work experience in the organization of training and workshops is highly preferred
- Evidence of experience in designing learning materials, experience in designing e-materials and working with Learning Management Systems is highly preferred
- Evidence of teamwork and contribution as a team member
