- Purpose: PURPOSE: Department heads effectively lead by inspiring staff while managing the teaching and research aspects of the department. They engender and foster a culture of excellence, cooperation and respect within the department and across the University’s academic and administrative divisions. CONTEXT: Departments group faculty members from related academic disciplines who are responsible primarily for related research, teaching and learning, and programme and module development. The Head of Department leads, manages and develops the department to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all activities.
Responsibilities
People and resources
• Promote and foster a positive, inclusive and collegial work environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and mutual support;
• Recruit and retain high-quality staff who can contribute to the Department, School and University;
• Lead a transparent partnership approach when taking major decisions. When decisions are difficult, helping staff evaluate and identify what is best for the department and University;
• Ensure effective operations within the Department and implement the workload model to enable the Department to achieve strategic goals while supporting individual work-life balance;
• Support and guide the career development of staff within the Department, encouraging active professional development;
• Manage and coordinate department personnel functions such as: hiring, performance evaluations, corrective action, vacation schedules, and compliance with the University’s Internal Labor Regulation and HR procedures.
Research and teaching
• Develop the commitment of the department to excellence in teaching and the provision of an enriching student experience. Help staff appreciate that students are not an ‘interruption’, they are the reason we are here driving both our teaching and research;
• Promote strong research-teaching synergies to enrich the quality of both teaching and research;
• Foster the leading role of research in the department and build the capacity for superior research across all disciplines;
• Strengthen an intellectually stimulating environment for both students and staff. Maintain and develop an optimal research infrastructure linking people and resources;
• Foster innovative approaches to teaching supported by high-quality learning facilities;
• Ensure that the Department actively and effectively engages with national bodies, industry, leaders in order to create research and learning opportunities, which may lead to collaborative partnerships and entrepreneurial activities;
• Encourage a culture of innovation;
• Advocate for, and represent, the interests and needs of the Department within the University and the School through engagement with staff and committees across the University and within Academic and Administrative Departments;
• Lead the teaching of given courses or otherwise significantly participate in the teaching.
Strategy and planning
• Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Department, in consultation with other colleagues, which enhances the standing of the Department and is aligned with School and University strategy and goals;
• Foster ongoing discussions with staff to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in decisions about where the Department is heading and how excellence can be achieved;
• Create an environment that implements strategic planning and operational teaching and learning plans.
Quality Assurance and Enhancement
• Be responsible for the APMR and quality oversight of programmes within the department.
Requirements
PERSON SPECIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
• A research doctorate in Finance/Economics or related discipline
• A strong record of accomplishment in the areas of teaching, research, and service
· A record of excellence in prior academic posts
· Candidates who have achieved the rank of Professor are preferred, while Associate Professors with exceptional leadership and administrative experience will be considered
